J.H. Roman: Assaggi for Solo Violin
'The father of Swedish music' and 'the Swedish Handel' are two descriptions of Johan Helmich Roman, one of Sweden's most important composers. About as cosmopolitan as you could get, he spent six years in Handel's orchestra at the King's Theatre, and his extensive travels around Europe brought him into contact with fellow composers in France, Italy and Germany. Roman composed around twenty Assaggi (Assaggio has been translated as 'sample', 'essay', 'study' or 'experiment'). Composed between 1720-40, they range from multi movement works to single movements, with some surviving as just fragments. They are beautifully written for the violin and reveal a startling musical imagination at work. Baroque violinist Alison Luthmers’ captivating interpretation brings these unique pieces to life.

As Scandinavia’s only period instrument string quartet, the Bellevue String Quartet engages audiences through their unique, conceptual programs. Jewels of the string quartet repertoire are combined with newly commissioned works, 17th-century consort and arrangements of opera arias and Scandinavian folk music, offering a musical experience seldom found at a standard string quartet concert. In order to seek out a new and diverse audience, the quartet creates an intimate concert environment, both on the concert stage and in small, non-traditional venues. Based in Malmö, Sweden, the quartet performs regularly in a variety of venues in the Öresund region including Klubb Krinolin and Andy’s Corner in Malmö, Magle Konserthus in Lund, Valfisken in Simrishamn and Early Monday in Copenhagen, as well as at Trigonale Festival in Austria.
